The Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) (FREC3) encompasses the complete range of skills mandated by the HSE for first aid and is the foremost qualification for event coverage. For those with further aspirations, it also serves as the initial step towards a career in prehospital care.

Among the first to arrive at a scene, first responders typically include police officers, firefighters, and those providing medical cover at festivals and events such as Emergency/Community First Responders, Door Supervisors, Close Protection Operatives, and Security Guards, as well as those working in high-risk environments including the military, power stations, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Syllabus

The syllabus for the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in First Response Emergency Care (RQF) includes a comprehensive range of topics designed to equip learners with the necessary skills for prehospital emergency care. Here are some of the key areas covered:

  1. Administration of Emergency Oxygen: Techniques and protocols for providing emergency oxygen to patients.
  2. Management of Trauma Patients: Handling various types of trauma, including assessment and treatment.
  3. Major Illnesses: Recognition and management of major illnesses that may require emergency care.
  4. Wounds, Bleeding, and Shock: Understanding the circulatory system, managing blood loss, and treating shock1.
  5. Practical Skills: Hands-on training to deal with a range of emergency situations, fulfilling the competencies set out in the PHEM skills framework at level D2.

The course also includes multiple assessments to ensure learners have mastered the necessary skills and knowledge

Assessment Methods

  • 6 x practical assessments/skills tests
  • 3 x theory assessments (multiple choice question papers)
  • 1 x invigilated exam.

Qualification 

Once you have successfully completed the FREC 3 training your certification will last for three years. You may decide to progress through to Level 4 before it expires or to renew your Level 3 certification.
